Statement on Resistance to Viral Penetration

May 21, 2020

Tingley Rubber Corporation has received many inquiries regarding our products and ways to help protect against the SARS-CoV-2 that causes Covid-19 disease. In response, Tingley tested various products using ASTM F1671, the Standard Test Method for Resistance of Materials Used in Protective Clothing to Penetration by Blood-Borne Pathogens using phi-X174 bacteriophage penetration as a test system. The ASTM F1671 is a well-known and internationally recognized test method using a liquid suspension containing the phi-X174 bacteriophage virus to simulate contaminated body fluids.

Briefly, the ASTM test works by exposing one surface of clothing or footwear to the phi-X174 virus suspension. The test article is then subjected to 0 kPa [0 psig] for 5 min, followed by 13.8 kPa [2 psig] for 1 min, followed by 0 kPa [0 psig] for 54 min. All the while, a technician is observing the test chamber to see if any virus suspension liquid appears on the transverse test surface. At the end of the test, the transverse test surface is rinsed with sterile medium and the collected rinse medium is assayed for the presence of the phi-X174 bacteriophage. A PASSING RESULT can only be obtained if no visualization and no assay presence for the virus are detected.

The following styles of Tingley protective footwear achieved a PASSING RESULT for ASTM F1671 testing:
Hazproof® Hazardous Response Boots
Boot Saver® Disposable Shoe Covers
Flite® Protective Knee Boots
Premier G2® PVC Protective Knee Boots
Pylon® Dipped Neoprene Protective Knee Boots

In addition, the fabric for the following apparel styles also received a passing result for this test:

● Safetyflex® Permeation Performance Suits
● Durascrim™ Coated PVC on Polyester Protection

Tingley will continue to evaluate our apparel and footwear for their resistance to viral penetration so that we can provide customers with up-to-date information. While Tingley products are not designed for medical applications, this information provides customers with possible alternatives when seeking protection from incidental and short duration viral exposures.
